DENSUS

What a very old church is that in Densus!... The church of Densus, a place in the Hateg Country, situated at a few kilometers from Ulpia Traiana Sarmisegetusa, is still keeping its secrets, so that nobody can assuredly say when it was built. Historians’opinions are divided. Some say that this church might have been built on the ruins of a pre Christian edifice in Dacia, others think that it was erected on the foundation of a Temple, dedicated to the god Mars; many say that the church first functioned as a mausoleum devoted to the Roman general Longinus Maximus, killed by the Dacians; Nicolae Iorga situates it in the 16th century while the art historian Vataseanu thinks it may belong to the last quarter of the 13th century. But what is absolutely certain is that at present it is the most ancient church in Romania where the service still is celebrated.

HISTRIA ROMANIA

On the Sinoe lakeside at a distance of 500 “stadia” from the Istros sacred mouth (as Strabo specifies it), there lay “Histria City”, the first Greek settlement on the western shore of the Black Sea and the most ancient town on Romania's territory. Archaeological excavations, started from early 1914 revealed, besides the precincts' remains, a series of remarkable monuments dating from different epoques of the city's existence. RED LAKE- LACUL ROSU

The saying goes that a rock fallen from the mountain blocked the Bicaz River course and formed the lake. Actually, the interesting fact about this lake is not the way in which it formed itself not even its colour (which is not red as its names states it but yellowish) but its rather spectacular aspect. Nearly two hundred years ago or so in the place of this lake there was a forest. Nowadays the lake looks like a sunken forest.Throughout the lake the former tree-trunks can be seen coming out of the water. The lake is situated at an altitude of 983 m in a small mountain depression, a world unique region where the forests of evegren fir-trees and the air pure and invigorating offer good resting conditions. The lake's name comes either from the Ucigasul (Killer) Mountain or the Rosu (Red) Brook which is also called Verescheu. One of the popular legends makes the connection between “red” and “killer” recounting that in its fall the mountain buried a flock of...
